Overflow

The film “Overflowing” opens with a distant, almost drowsy gaze wandering across the landscapes of Jerusalem. Yet, the familiar and the secure become unsettled: the gaze plunges into an intimate private space which becomes alien, threatening, and distorted. The familiar is no longer a sanctuary, but a place where memory and imagination intrude and unravel.

This film is a creative collaboration of the incubator ‘Riso-mation”—a unique meeting of ten creatives who took an analog printing process and melded it with digital animation.

The filmmaking process directly mirrored the experience of the city itself. The collaborative effort of the creators along with two mentors became a dynamic, chaotic arena where fragments, images, and ideas poured in from every direction.

Like Risograph printing—where each color is added as a separate layer, leaving room for serendipitous errors, chance, and vitality—the film was constructed as a living, breathing tapestry.

This visual richness is complemented by a unique polyphonic vocal language: a mosaic of diverse voices reciting the text, shifting—at times—word by word, or—at others—merging to echo the exact same word in unison. This combination creates a constant and fascinating tension between the voice of the individual and the clamor of the collective.

The sense of the uncanny within the familiar is also articulated through visual multiplicity. Each artist contributed a personal “Jerusalemite idiom” and together forged a collective dialect that is rich in layers and teeming with life.
